The Groom and His Tutor is a small mixed media work using Garzapapel watercolor paper as the support surface. I have combined watercolor, airbrushed acrylics and collage papers along with Dresden embossed foil elements. All the media combine to create the layering of textures and patterns…the result being a celebration of the passage of time and a sense of history.
I am a narrative painter. I present various symbols and identifiable images to the viewer. Often I reference a specific story from cultures around the world; these references are simply the springboard to build a personalized tale. Find your own story as relates to the image…let the image grow with you.
The title refers to the ancient Irish tradition that the ruler of the people should be trained up in the art of service and the land was conceived as the spouse of the ruler. I often revisit this theme when election time in the United States rolls around…one may expect to see this theme on a four year cycle.
Of course, depending upon how the current American election plays out, I may have to change the title from The Groom and His Tutor to The Bride and Her Tutor…certainly these are notable times to witness.
