This is the second work done for the PSA exhibition in May. The theme is Things Come Together, Things Fall Apart. Both paintings present the idea of choice making with the ultimate goal of progressing from one state of understanding to a new state. I employ graffiti like symbols I associate with this choice making. The comet has traditionally been seen as a harbinger of change, so it has found its image in the top section of this work. It is common in folktales around the world for the inquiring soul to find a guide to point them in the direction of their choices. In this case I opted for the deer image as the guide. Ultimately it is the individual’s personal direction that creates a new understanding.
“We think that the point is to pass the test or overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.”
